On Christmas night, 2012, Secret Service agent Mike Banning is driving President Benjamin Asher and his wife Margaret to a fundraiser when their car skids on ice and crashes into a bridge. Banning manages to save Asher, but Margaret falls to her death. Banning is blamed for the accident and reassigned to desk duty at the Treasury Department.
18 months later, on July 5, 2013, a large group of North Korean terrorists led by Kang Yeonsak infiltrates Washington, D.C. and launches a coordinated attack on the White House, using a modified AC-130 gunship, suicide bombers and ground troops. They kill most of the Secret Service agents and take Asher and several other officials hostage in the presidential bunker. Banning, who is nearby, manages to enter the White House and establish contact with Lynne Jacobs, the Director of the Secret Service, and Allan Trumbull, the Speaker of the House who becomes Acting President after Asher is captured.
Banning learns that Kang is a wanted international criminal who seeks to reunite Korea under his rule. He demands that the U.S. withdraw its forces from the Korean Peninsula and detonate all its nuclear weapons in their silos, or he will kill Asher and destroy major American cities with a stolen nuclear missile hidden in the bunker. He also reveals that he has an inside man, Dave Forbes, a former Secret Service agent who works as a private security contractor for Asher's staff. Forbes kills several hostages and tries to kill Banning, but Banning kills him first.
