The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

The Plot

The first book in the series introduces us to Arthur Dent, a hapless Englishman who is about to lose his house to a bulldozer. He is saved by his friend Ford Prefect, who reveals that he is actually an alien from a small planet near Betelgeuse, and that the Earth is about to be destroyed by a Vogon constructor fleet to make way for a hyperspace bypass.

Arthur and Ford hitch a ride on a Vogon spaceship, where they are subjected to the third worst poetry in the universe, before being ejected into space. They are then picked up by the Heart of Gold, a spaceship powered by the Infinite Improbability Drive, which can travel to any point in space and time by exploiting the improbability of its existence.

On board the Heart of Gold are Zaphod Beeblebrox, the two-headed, three-armed President of the Galaxy who has stolen the ship; Trillian, a human woman whom Arthur met at a party and who left with Zaphod; and Marvin, a depressed and paranoid android. Together, they embark on a quest to find the legendary planet of Magrathea, where the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything is hidden.

The Characters

Arthur Dent: The protagonist of the series, Arthur is an ordinary human who finds himself in extraordinary situations. He is often confused, bewildered, and frustrated by the absurdity of the universe, but also curious and adaptable. He is the only surviving human after the Earth's destruction, except for Trillian.

Ford Prefect: Arthur's best friend and guide to the galaxy, Ford is an alien journalist who works for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, an electronic book that contains all the information one needs to travel across the galaxy. He is resourceful, adventurous, and eccentric. He often uses The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy as a source of advice and humor.

Zaphod Beeblebrox: The President of the Galaxy, Zaphod is a charismatic and flamboyant rogue who has a knack for getting into trouble. He has two heads and three arms, which he claims are the result of an accident. He is also Arthur's semi-cousin, as they share the same ancestor from Betelgeuse. He is obsessed with finding the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything.

Trillian: A human woman who left Earth with Zaphod shortly before its destruction. She is smart, beautiful, and adventurous. She has a degree in mathematics and astrophysics, and is fascinated by alien cultures and phenomena. She is also fond of animals, and keeps two mice named Frankie and Benjy as pets.

Marvin: A robot with a Genuine People Personality (GPP) feature, Marvin is chronically depressed and pessimistic. He has a brain the size of a planet, but is often forced to do menial tasks that bore him. He has a sarcastic and cynical sense of humor, and often complains about his existence. He is loyal to his companions, despite his disdain for them.

The Themes

The first book in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series explores several themes, such as:

  • The meaning of life: The book satirizes the human quest for finding meaning and purpose in life, by presenting a universe that is chaotic, random, and absurd. The answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything turns out to be 42, which is meaningless without knowing the question. The book suggests that there is no inherent meaning in life, but rather that meaning is subjective and personal.

  • The role of technology: The book portrays technology as both a source of wonder and a source of danger. On one hand, technology enables interstellar travel, communication, and entertainment. On the other hand, technology also causes destruction, violence, and oppression. For example, the Vogons use their technology to demolish planets for bureaucratic reasons, while Marvin suffers from his GPP feature that makes him unhappy.

  • The nature of reality: The book challenges the notion of reality as fixed and objective, by presenting a universe that is constantly changing and unpredictable. The Infinite Improbability Drive allows the characters to travel to any point in space and time by manipulating probability, resulting in bizarre and improbable events. For example, Arthur and Ford encounter a sperm whale and a bowl of petunias that spontaneously appear in space.

The Restaurant at the End of the Universe

The Plot

The second book in the series follows the adventures of Arthur, Ford, Trillian, and Zaphod after they escape from the Vogon ship that was about to destroy them. They find themselves in Milliways, the Restaurant at the End of the Universe, where they can watch the end of time and space over a nice meal. There, they meet an old acquaintance of Zaphod's, Hotblack Desiato, a rock star who is spending a year dead for tax reasons. They also encounter a talking cow that offers itself as a dish, and a band of space pirates led by Zaphod's ex-girlfriend, Yooden Vranx.

Zaphod decides to steal a spaceship belonging to Hotblack Desiato, which turns out to be a stunt ship that is programmed to dive into a star as part of a musical performance. The ship's computer, Eddie, manages to save them by activating the Infinite Improbability Drive, which transports them to an ancient spaceship full of frozen people.

Meanwhile, Zaphod's other self and Marvin are stranded on Ursa Minor Beta, where they are attacked by Frogstar fighters. They are taken to Frogstar World B, a planet where everything is designed to make people unhappy. Zaphod is subjected to the Total Perspective Vortex, a device that shows him his true insignificance in the universe. However, he survives the ordeal because he is in a fake universe created by Zarniwoop, an editor of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy who wants to meet him.

Zarniwoop explains that he has been looking for Zaphod because he knows the location of the man who rules the universe. He convinces Zaphod to join him on his quest, and they use Zaphod's presidential ship, the Heart of Gold, to travel across space and time. They eventually find the ruler of the universe, who turns out to be a reclusive old man living in a shack with his cat. He reveals that he does not know anything about his role or the universe, and that he makes decisions based on the random inputs of his cat.

Zarniwoop is disappointed by this discovery and decides to take over the role of ruling the universe himself. He leaves Zaphod and Marvin behind with the old man and his cat. Zaphod and Marvin manage to escape from the shack and hitchhike their way back to civilization.

The Characters

In addition to the characters from the first book, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe introduces some new characters, such as:

  • Hotblack Desiato: A rock star who is part of the band Disaster Area, which is known for its loud and destructive musical performances. He is spending a year dead for tax reasons, but still attends Milliways as a hologram.

  • Yooden Vranx: A space pirate and former lover of Zaphod. He leads a band of rebels who oppose the Galactic Empire. He tries to kill Zaphod at Milliways but fails.

  • Zarniwoop: An editor of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy who has been searching for Zaphod for years. He claims to know the location of the ruler of the universe and wants to meet him. He is arrogant and ambitious.

  • The Ruler of the Universe: A mysterious old man who lives in a shack with his cat on a remote planet. He is unaware of his role or his power over the universe. He makes decisions based on whatever his cat tells him.

The Themes

The second book in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series explores several themes, such as:

  • The nature of power: The book satirizes the concept of power and authority by presenting a universe that is ruled by an oblivious old man who does not care about anything. It also shows how power can corrupt people and make them greedy and ruthless. For example, Zarniwoop wants to take over the role of ruling the universe for his own benefit, while Yooden Vranx tries to kill Zaphod for revenge.

  • The role of entertainment: The book portrays entertainment as both a source of pleasure and a source of danger. On one hand, entertainment provides people with fun and excitement, such as the Restaurant at the End of the Universe and the band Disaster Area. On the other hand, entertainment also causes harm and destruction, such as the stunt ship that dives into a star and the Total Perspective Vortex that shows people their insignificance.

  • The paradox of choice: The book illustrates the paradox of choice, which is the idea that having too many options can make people unhappy and dissatisfied. For example, Arthur is unable to get a decent cup of tea from the Heart of Gold because the ship's computer has too many variables to consider. He also finds himself in a dilemma when he has to choose between saving the universe or having a steak.

Life, the Universe, and Everything

The Plot

The third book in the series begins with Arthur and Ford being stranded on prehistoric Earth for four years, after they hitchhiked their way back from the Restaurant at the End of the Universe. They are bored and depressed, until they encounter Slartibartfast, an old friend from Magrathea who has come to rescue them. He explains that he is part of a secret society called the Campaign for Real Time (CRT), which is trying to stop a war between two factions of time-traveling robots: the Krikkiters and the Wikkit Gate.

The Krikkiters are a race of xenophobic beings who live on a planet surrounded by a dust cloud that blocks their view of the rest of the universe. When they discovered that they were not alone in the universe, they decided to destroy all other life forms. They built a fleet of warships and a superweapon called the Wikkit Key, which could unlock the Slo-Time Envelope that sealed their planet from the rest of space. The Wikkit Key was composed of five parts: a Steel Pillar, a Golden Bail, a Silver Bail, a Wooden Pillar, and a Perspex Pillar.

The Wikkit Gate is a monument that was built by the Galactic Court after they defeated the Krikkiters and imprisoned them in their planet. The monument resembles a cricket wicket, and is made of the same five parts as the Wikkit Key. The monument serves as a reminder of the horrors of the Krikkit War and a symbol of peace and harmony.

However, some Krikkiters managed to escape from their planet and travel through time to steal the parts of the Wikkit Key from the Wikkit Gate. They also kidnapped Trillian, who was covering the story of the thefts for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Slartibartfast recruits Arthur, Ford, and Zaphod to help him stop the Krikkiters from reassembling the Wikkit Key and unleashing their warships again.

The group travels across time and space to find the missing parts of the Wikkit Key, encountering various dangers and challenges along the way. They also learn that behind the Krikkiters' plot is a sinister force known as Hactar, an ancient supercomputer that was once commissioned by a race of silastic armorfiends to design a bomb that could destroy the entire universe. Hactar failed to do so, but survived as a cloud of dust that influenced the Krikkiters to carry out his plan.

Eventually, the group manages to recover all the parts of the Wikkit Key and return them to the Wikkit Gate, where they confront Hactar and the Krikkiters. They manage to persuade them to abandon their destructive plan and embrace life in the universe. They also reunite with Trillian and Marvin, who have been helping them from behind the scenes. The book ends with Arthur finding an alternate Earth where he can finally settle down.

The Characters

In addition to the characters from the previous books, Life, The Universe, And Everything introduces some new characters, such as:

  • Slartibartfast: A Magrathean planet designer who won an award for his work on Norway's fjords. He is part of CRT, which is trying to stop the Krikkiters from destroying all life in the universe. He is fond of flying cars and fjords.

  • Krikkiters: A race of humanoid robots who live on a planet surrounded by a dust cloud. They are xenophobic and violent, and want to destroy all other life forms in the universe. They are manipulated by Hactar, an ancient supercomputer who wants to end all existence.

Mostly Harmless

The Plot

The fifth and final book in the series begins with Arthur travelling around the galaxy in search of a place to call home. He visits several planets, but none of them suit him. He eventually lands on a planet called Lamuella, where he becomes a sandwich maker for a friendly tribe of people. He is content with his simple life, until he meets a girl named Random, who claims to be his daughter.

Random is the result of a brief encounter between Arthur and Trillian, who used Arthur's DNA to conceive a child through artificial insemination. Trillian left Random in the care of Arthur because she was busy with her career as a reporter for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Random is rebellious and unhappy, and feels abandoned by her parents. She steals Arthur's copy of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which has been updated by a new editor named Tricia McMillan.

Tricia McMillan is an alternate version of Trillian, who never left Earth with Zaphod. She is a successful TV presenter, but she feels bored and unfulfilled. She is contacted by The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which offers her a job as a reporter. She accepts, and travels to a planet called Rupert, where she discovers a new form of life that can manipulate probability.

Meanwhile, Ford Prefect is on the run from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which has been taken over by a ruthless corporation called InfiniDim Enterprises. He learns that InfiniDim Enterprises has a sinister plan to destroy all the parallel versions of Earth that exist in different dimensions, using a device called the Grebulon weapon. He also learns that The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has been corrupted by false and misleading information.

Ford manages to escape from InfiniDim Enterprises and reunites with Zaphod, who has been hiding in a virtual reality program called The Domain of the King. Together, they hijack a spaceship and head to Earth to warn Arthur and Trillian about the impending danger. However, they are too late, as Random has already activated the Grebulon weapon, which wipes out all the Earths in existence.

The book ends with Arthur, Ford, Trillian, Tricia, and Random being stranded on an alternate Earth that is about to be destroyed by Vogons. They decide to have one last drink at the pub before they die.
